DARK AGE

Albert Saijo, Bamboo Ridge, Journal of Hawai'i Literature and Arts, 2012.

I WANT A DARK AGE - AN AGE THAT LEAVES NO TRACE - LET FUTURE TRY TO FIND US - I WANT A DARK AGE - AN AGE IN WHICH NOTHING HAPPENS BUT EXISTENCE AND DAYS ARE NOT  NUMBERED - I WANT A DARK AGE - A DARK AGE OF THE IMAGINATION THAT FLOWERS STARK & SEXUAL AS A SCARLET ANTHURIUM - I WANT A DARK AGE - AN AGE IN WHICH NOTHING TRAVELS FASTER THAN DAY - AN AGE OF QUIET - I WANT AN AGE WITHOUT FEAR - I WANT A DARK AGE.

"LET FUTURE TRY TO FIND US" and "LETS HAVE NO EXPLANATION", 2015, 20"h x 26"w, each, tapa, ink, pencil, paint, lithograph, cotton rag paper.

I was part of an international group of artists selected to visually interpret poetry by the late Albert Saijo for the exhibition/symposium Poetry Scores Hawai’i:  Look Like What It Is, at the University of Hawai’i, Hilo, 2015.

"Albert Saijo met Jack Kerouac in San Francisco's Chinatown during the '50s, and among other projects, collaborated on an epic haiku recounting a road trip. Currently a Big Island resident, Saijo is published by Bamboo Ridge."

FLAT EARTH

Albert Saijo, Bamboo Ridge, Journal of Hawai'i Literature and Arts, 2012.

I WANT THE EARTH TO BE FLAT & CIRCULAR WITH MYSELF AT THE CENTER ALWAYS - AND I WANT IT TO BE THE SAME FOR EVERY OTHER CREATURE AS EVERY CREATURE IS AT THE CENTER OF ITS OWN RAINBOW - THE ASTRONOMY CAN FOLLOW - THERE WILL BE THE ILLUSION OF CURVING AWAY AT THE HORIZON BUT THIS IS OK SINCE WE NEVER REACH THE HORIZON - THE ILLUSION IS PURELY AN ARTIFACT OF OUR MODE OF APPREHENSION - THE IDEA OF A SPHERICAL EARTH HAS PROVED A TROUBLESOME ONE - DO WE NEED IT - LETS GET TO WHERE WE DONT - THINK OF IT - THE EARTH IS FLAT & CIRCULAR - STILL YOU MAY MOVE OVER IT IN ANY DIRECTION WITHOUT EVER REACHING AN END - YOU MAY EVEN RETURN TO THE SAME SPOT MANY TIMES - MYSTERY OF MYSTERIES - LETS HAVE NO EXPLANATION FOR THIS.
