Pu'u O'o Dream, 2020, diptych, 70"w x 76"h, handwoven cotton thread, dye, ink. The text is from the mele Aia la 'o Pele. I wove the fabric in the 1980s, painted the images with photochromic dyes in 2014, and added the text in 2020. Photochromic dyes start out clear and only show their colors when exposed to sunlight, to become the most light-fast of the textile dyes. I enjoyed the challenge of painting without knowing how the colors would develop.
